Cooking
Cooking has a range of benefits for all children, but particularly for those with social, emotional or communication needs. Apart from the obvious life skills of learning how to cook and appreciate a range of tastes and flavours, the advantages of cooking can be seen in the development of communication and language. Skills such as following simple instructions and describing what you are doing, seeing, smelling, feeling and tasting are all essential elements to every cooking session. Whilst being fun and an excellent platform for building relationships, cooking can also help to build self-esteem and develop children’s fine motor and hand-eye coordination skills through stirring, squeezing, rolling, measuring and spreading. There also clear connections to key learning outcomes in maths (counting, measuring, proportional language), science (prediction, observation, changing materials) and creativity.
