Intensive Interaction

Intensive interaction is an approach aimed at enhancing the communication abilities of children who have severe sensory problems, severe learning difficulties or autism. It can be thought of as trying to have natural conversations at a level the person can understand and join in with. The aim is to join the child in interactive rather than directive play, and to create some sense of meaning and enjoyment in just being with others.

Fundamentals of communication

We are trying to help the child to:

  • Enjoy being with another person
  • Being able to pay some attention to someone else
  • Learn to share personal space
  • Make better use and understanding of their eye gaze/eye contact
  • Have better use and understanding of simple body language
  • Use and accept physical touch
  • Use the sounds they make in a meaningful way

Key principles for the adult:

  • learn to tune in and understand what is important to the child
  • learn to go at the child’s pace, they lead the session
  • learn to use pauses, long and short
  • practice being responsive, not taking over
  • Aim for fun and enjoyment!
