Word aware is a language programme that focusses on learning new words. An adult chooses a word that is important and will be useful for children to understand and use. Children in a small group learn lots of different things about the word – what is means, what it looks like/a picture or diagram to show what words mean, how it is spelt, the first and last sound, how many syllables are in the word, what is rhymes with, how to use the word in a sentence, and will help to make up an action or song about the word. Learning lots of different things about the word can help us to remember the word and then use it when again. The group then does an activity or plays a game to strengthen the learning of the word, and it is then looked at again in future sessions.
