Lexia

Lexia uses interactive games to help children learn to read using both their phonics knowledge and comprehension skills. Lexia is being run with children in year 1, children with EAL or those who need additional support in reading. This online programme is a way of enhancing children’s reading ability. The programme is run through an online app; which can be accessed both in school and from home. An adult will support the children set up their ipads but cannot help throughout the session. Once the children complete the daily tasks the adult can access all learning to see what they can do to support the children further and identify any gaps in the learning.

If you are interested in accessing Lexia for use at home, you can easily download the app and contact Mr. Knowles for details on how to access your child’s account.

Below are some additional strategies that will be used in the intervention that you could also support at home:

  • Daily reading – a child will need to practise the skills they are learning through the lexia app, so it is important to spend 10-15 minutes per day reading with your child.

  • Change your language to make it easier to understand – children understand new language best if it at the right level for them, e.g. use short sentences, repeat words and use gesture when you are talking.

  • Praise – giving positive praise for talking and behaviour can motivate a child to use the new words and phrases at other times. Immediate praise for good things is usually more effective than correcting their talking and expressing disapproval.

  • Reading Strategies – children will learn how to approach different words they find tricky to read. Encourage them to do use the following methods on any words they are struggling to read – use their phonics, syllable chunks, little words in big words and read around the word.
